Combustible dust explosions can have a devastating impact on businesses of all sizes. The financial costs can be astronomical, including:

  • Property damage

Got Questions? We’ve got Answers.

Combustible dust is any finely divided solid material that can ignite and burn rapidly when suspended in air. It’s created by a wide variety of common manufacturing materials, including food, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, chemicals, wood, textiles, and metals.
According to NFPA 654, a combustible particulate solid can cause a fire or deflagration hazard when suspended in air or some other oxidizing medium at varying concentrations, regardless of particle size or shape.

Combustible dust explosions are a serious threat to safety and property. In fact, they’re the leading cause of industrial plant explosions. Just a small amount of dust can create a cloud that’s easily ignited by a spark from a static discharge, electrical arc, or hot surface.

According to NFPA 654, 3.3.7, it is a combustion which propagates through a gas or across the surface of an explosive at subsonic speeds, driven by the transfer of heat.

Any solid material that can burn and is made up of particles or pieces, including fibers, chips, fines, dust, and flakes.

The smaller the particle size, the greater the likelihood of explosion and danger of the particulate.

Typically found in elevated sections of structures such as beams, ventilation systems, and fixtures.

When a deflagrable particle is suspended and a sufficient amount of energy is applied per unit of time and volume, it will ignite.

The concentration threshold necessary to maintain the combustion of a particulate suspension in the air or any other medium.
